A local man pushed a police officer in the chest whilst drunk a week after being laid off, Bournemouth Magistrates heard today.
Stephen John Arnold, 34, of Porchester Road, Bournemouth, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and verbally abusing a member of the public.
Dr Alieun Jobateh, prosecuting, said Arnold was approached by a police officer who saw him being abusive towards a member of the public in the evening on Jan 10.
After asking Arnold to stop, the officer was forced to place himself between the defendant and other person, said Dr Jobateh.
The defendant then pushed the officer in the chest but was then restrained and arrested.
Arnold’s actions were abusive and disorderly, said Dr Jobateh.
He had initially refused to give his name to the officer and appeared intoxicated at the time, he added.
Miss Watson, defending, said Arnold was drinking because he had been ‘laid off’ the week before, but she noted however that this was not an excuse for his behavior.
“Mr Arnold co-operated with police and is very remorseful for his behavior,” she added.
Sentencing was adjourned.

Local retailers in Southbourne move online.
Local businesses in Southbourne Grove high street are going online in a bid to beat the credit crunch and adapt to a changing market.
Business owner Lorraine Bate has successfully run ‘YYUK Clothing’ in Southbourne for the past six years , but with the onset of the recession she has been forced to put the shop up to let.
Rather than close her business completely Lorraine has opted to move her business online in a bid to reduce overheads and keep her business afloat.
Describing the current situation in Southbourne Lorraine said:
‘This was the worst Christmas that we have ever had, Southbourne has been badly affected, you can see how many shops are up for let, and it’s depressing.’
Business however is bright for 'Sugar Mango' a new jewellery shop that opened in the area just six months ago has found business steady.
Owner of the shop Heather Martin said:
‘As long as we remain positive and listen to what customers want hopefully we’ll be fine. We’ve set up a website selling our products which has been a very positive addition to the business.’
She is also hoping that the opening of a new Tesco Express in Southbourne Grove will draw shoppers back to the area and make up for the loss of the local Woolworths store, which has seen shoppers in the area dwindle.

New Tesco Express for Southbourne
Plans for a new Tesco Express store are being welcomed as a positive boost to the area.
Business owners say they have noticed a decline in the number of people visiting Southbourne following the closure of the local Woolworths store. There have been a number of closures in the area and the number of ‘to let’ is said to be increasing.
Bournemouth Council Planning Officer Dean Rudd said:
"We can confirm that there is a current application from Tesco’s for advertising signage and alterations to the premises at number 28-30 Southbourne Grove."
Co-owner of the newly established jewellery store ‘Sugar mango’ Heather Martyn expressed her support for the new Tesco Express.
She said: "Unless we get some big names in to replace the draw that Woolworths brought to the area then local businesses will really struggle. Tesco’s moving into the area will be good for local business. It’s a case of finding a balance between small local shops and chains like Tesco."
For some local shoppers news of a new Tesco-express in the area has been welcomed. Rebecca Hughes, 32, often visits the Tesco express in Pokesdown.
“A Tesco closer to home will be a boost to the area and a God send for mothers like me. There are so many empty shops down this street; it’s beginning to look run-down and tatty.”
The planned store will be the second new Tesco outlet opening in Bournemouth following news last month that a Tesco Express is due to open in the Triangle by December. Bournemouth Town Council confirmed that planning permission is due to be completed by March .
